Today, I met Vladimir Nabokov, the famous Russian born, American emigre author, in an article on how writers stack up as public speakers and conversationalists. This article mentions how Nabokov was a powerful writer but turned out to be an inept conversationalist.
What stayed with me from that article is his words - that the only attachment he had in life, after leaving his homeland, was to the "UNREAL ESTATE" of art and memories.
Apparently, even after earning much wealth after his novel, Lolita, became a critically acclaimed best seller, he and his family preferred not to buy a house and instead stayed in rented houses and humble hotels.
Nabokov's words - Unreal Estate - stay with me, triggering a multitude of memories and egging me to be more consistently dedicated to the art of writing.
